Learn the various options of the File menu in Kotobee Author.

The File menu is your main reference point when opening Kotobee Author, especially to create your first ebook. Going down the File menu provides you with various options to start your ebook. The options are:

  • New
  • Open (KPUB2, EPUB)
  • Open recent
  • Import from
  • Save/Save as
  • Optimize and save
  • Create timestamped backup

New

This option allows you to open up a blank ebook for you to start from scratch. To start a new ebook select File > New. Choose the type of layout you'd like and start writing once the blank space opens.

Open (KPUB2, EPUB)

This option allows you to use an already existing project file. To do that, select File Open (KPUB2, EPUB).  Any project file you save on Kotobee Author has the extension KPUB2. They are based on the EPUB format, which is why you can simply open any EPUB file in Kotobee Author as well. Choose the file you want to use and click Open.

Open recent

Kotobee Author keeps track of up to 20 recent ebook projects you have worked on. This option allows you to select a book from this list, select File > Open recent and find the file from there.

Import from

This option allows you to use an existing PDF, HTML or Word file to export content from in varying degrees. To do so, click on File > Import From, then choose either a PDF, HTML or DOCX file to import.

Save/Save as

To prevent the loss of your work, it is recommended to continuously save your file, or Save As, if you wish to save your work under a new name. To do so click on File >Save/Save as.

Optimize and save

You will find options to "optimize" your ebook throughout the software, such as with this option to Optimize and save from the File menu. Optimizing scans your ebook assets, such as video, audio, images, and eliminates any redundant or unused files, reducing the size of the project.  To do so here, click on File >Optimize and save.

Create timestamped backup

This option is similar to that of Save as, but it saves the file in the same location while adding the timestamp to the end of the file. The difference between it and Save as is that when you continue saving your work normally, it will save to the old original filename, not the new timestamped filename. To do that, click on File >Create timestamped backup. The shortcut way to get it is it Alt+Ctrl T, it's best to do that every 15 minutes while working on your ebook.

Kotobee Author periodically makes copies of your files in a temporary folder, in case the software suddenly shuts down (e.g. power-cut, or hardware shutdown). The next time you run Kotobee Author, a dialog box will ask you if you'd like to restore the previously opened content.
