Kotobee Author allows you to add MP4 or YouTube videos to your ebook. Your video files may be remote (online) or local (offline). For better user experience and for reducing the file size of your ebook, we recommend that videos are residing on a server and linked to. There are cases which require videos be available offline, and in these cases it's better to add the video files to the ebook. In such cases, we recommend that the videos are compressed appropriately using a tool such as Adobe Media Encoder.

If the video is an MP4 file, and the ebook running in the browser, the browser's default video player is used as the controller for the video. Note that you may also find various ebook widgets that may play videos in full screen. For example, here is a Vimeo player widget.

To add a video

Click on the Video tool. Either enter the video's url in the Video URL field or click on the Add video file button and browse for the video file. The rest of the properties are explained below. Once they are filled, click Create

Note: Its highly advised that the video be hosted online in order to reduce the file size of the ebook.

Layout properties

The width of the video element, with the choice of being pixel-based or percentage-based.
The height of the video element (pixel-based only).
Align the video element to either side and allow text to wrap beside it. Setting to 'None' centers the video element and consumes the entire horizontal space.
Disable text-wrapping for small screens
If text-wrap is set to left or right, this option appears. It will disable text-wrapping for small screens, allowing the video to occupy the entire row.
Set an empty spacing around the video element. Particularly useful when wrapping text around the element.
The CSS class to use with this video element.
Maintain aspect ratio
Scale the width and height proportionally when the video dimensions are too large for small screens. Note this works only when both width and height are in px units.

Design properties

The background color of the element, visible before the video is clicked for playing.
Splash Image
An image that will be initially displayed, before playing the video.

Start playing the video immediately once the chapter loads.
Hide download button
Some browsers such as Chrome will display a 'download' button along with the video playback controls. You may optionally hide this button by checking this option.
For LMS integration, optionally assign this video to a defined objective. You can define new objectives from the Book manager.

Adding Vimeo video

To add video from Vimeo, you should provide the MP4 URL of the video. Not all Vimeo video files are allowed public access. For videos that do allow this, you can fetch the file path easily by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Vimeo video page on your browser
  2. Click on Download, which you will find right above the video description
  3. A popup will appear. Right-click on the Download button, and choose "Copy link address" (in case you're using Chrome) to save the URL

What you've copied in your clipboard now is the MP4 URL of the video. You can use it now in Kotobee Author.
