Learn how to export a standard EPUB or an encrypted EPUB ebook with the help of Kotobee Author.
Standard Epub
Epub is one of the most popular ebook formats used worldwide, as it is the official ebook standard used by many apps.
To export an Epub book:
- Click on Export in the header bar.
- Click on EPUB in the Export Standard Files in the left panel.
If you are using Kotobee Author without a serial number, the Create button will read as “Enter serial number". Click on it and follow the instructions to register for a free serial number.
Once you have the required permissions, the button will turn to Create.
There are two options provided to help decrease the size of your ebook while exporting:- Remove scripting
EPUB is the only standard format to support both JavaScript and other interactive features. However, if you're not interested in exporting a file with either feature, simply check the box next to remove scripting and it will remove all of those features. - Optimize
Optimizing helps you decrease the size of your ebook by removing unused images and files. If you've manually added images through the file manager and will access them using JavaScript, you should not optimize your ebook.
- Remove scripting
- Click Create, and you're done.
EPUB Advanced Options
When exporting your ebook to EPUB, Kotobee Author provides a set of Advanced Options that allow you to control compatibility, validation, and output behavior.
To access these options, click on the Advanced Options button in the export settings.
- Remove scripting
Removes JavaScript and scripting elements (interactive elements) from the EPUB file. - Embed fonts in Apple Books
Embeds custom fonts to preserve typography when viewed in Apple Books. - Preserve customization
Stores all the customization options applied to the ebook inside the EPUB file. These customizations will take effect when you open the EPUB file using Kotobee Reader. - Optimize for Kindle
Checking this option will remove CSS styling or unsupported interactivity that may prevent your EPUB file from being uploaded to Amazon KDP. See Amazon’s formatting guidelines here. - Validate with EPUBCheck
Runs EPUBCheck to identify structural and validation issues during export. - Auto-fix validation errors
Automatically fixes common EPUB validation problems, such as missing attributes or broken links. - Encoding
Selects the character encoding for the EPUB file. UTF-8 is recommended for most ebooks. - Orientation
This setting controls page orientation behavior in the exported EPUB file. Choosing Portrait or Landscape will force the ebook to display in that orientation, while Auto allows it to adapt automatically to the reader’s device orientation.
Encrypted EPUB
The Encrypted EPUB format allows you full control over who can read your book and restricts access from unauthorized users. The ebook can only be opened using the Kotobee Reader app that's available for both mobile and desktop use. Any attempts to open the ebook with other readers will fail.
In order to encrypt your ebook:
- Click on Optimize (optional).
Optimizing helps you decrease the size of your ebook by removing unused images and files. If you've manually added images through the file manager and will access them using JavaScript, you should not optimize your ebook. - Type in an Encryption Password in the empty box.
- Click on Create, and you're done.
