A good practice of ebook authoring is to include linked references and navigation links from within your ebook content. These links may be external, to open websites on the web, or internal to jump to a certain location of one of your chapters or subchapters, or even display a popup message.

To add an external link

  • Select the text that you would like to link
  • Click on the Link tool. If you do not have text selected, an error message will appear
  • In the Link dialog box, Keep the default selected mode as To Website
  • In the URL field, enter the website or URL you would like to link to
  • Under the Target label, select whether you would like to open this link in a new window or in the same window. Note that this option is very minor and will rarely come into effect, except with with few ebook readers that run in the browser
  • Click Create

To add an internal link

  • If the target you would like to link to is not the start of the chapter, you will need to first place an anchor: Go to the target location, and click on the Anchor tool. Enter a name for the anchor
  • Select the text that you would like to link
  • Click on the Link tool. If you do not have text selected, an error message will appear
  • In the Link dialog box, Keep the default selected mode as To Book Location
  • In the Chapter field, select the chapter you would like to link to
  • If you are linking to an anchor, select the anchor from under the Anchor field
  • Click Create

To add a popup message

  • Select the text that you would like to set a popup message to
  • Click on the Link tool. If you do not have text selected, an error message will appear
  • In the Link dialog box, Keep the default selected mode as Popup message
  • Type in the message you would like
  • Click Create

To add an audio link

  • Select the text that you would like to set a popup message to
  • Click on the Link tool. If you do not have text selected, an error message will appear
  • In the Link dialog box, Keep the default selected mode as Audio
  • You may either link to a remote URL (MP3 link) or add your own MP3 file
  • Click Create

To edit any existing link, simply double click on the link, or place the text caret on the link, and click on the Link tool button.

Adding links to images

You can add links to images the same way that you add them to text. After adding the image to your chapter, select it (so that it's highlighted in blue). Click on the Link tool. Select the link mode you want and click Create. To preview the result, click on the chapter's Preview Mode button. Note that adding popup messages and audio to images result in very rich experiences.

Adding overlay buttons in fixed-layout chapters

With fixed-layout chapters, you can add links as an invisible button overlaying your content. This is particularly useful when importing PDF for example, and adding additional interactivity above the PDF page. To add an overlay button in fixed-layout chapters, simply click on the Link tool. With reflowable layouts, an error message would appear telling you to highlight some text first. In fixed-layout mode this is not the case. The Link dialogs box would appear with two additional properties.

Button color
The button's color
Transparency
Choose a value between 0 (invisible) and 100 (opaque) to specify the button's transparency

After adding the overlay button, you will be able to position and resize it visually like any interactive object in fixed-layout mode.
