Interactive questions are a primary strength of Kotobee Author, with a wide range of options to choose from. Although you may find many ebook widgets handling different types of questions, the most important thing to note out is that Kotobee Author's questions are embedded within the page among the actual content, and not in an external popup window as is the case with widgets. This gives users a more engaging experience without feeling that the questions are a separate part of the ebook.
To add questions
Click on the Questions tool. The Questions editor will appear.
Enter a title for the questions. This title will appear as the heading for the questions module. Select the response for the questions. There are three possible responses:
|Self-Answer||Display a score for the user after the answers are submitted|
|Self-Answer with report||Display a detailed score report showing the correct and incorrect answers|
|Do nothing||Do not do any action. This may be useful for activities taking place in the classroom, requiring teacher intervention|
Click on the type of question you would like to add to your questions component. You can add as many questions as you like. There are currently three types of supported questions:
|True/False||The question is a declarative statement that the reader must evaluate as true or false. As the author, you may change the values of True and False to anything else|
|MCQ Single Choice||The reader must select one correct answer out of the choices from the list. There can be many choices in the list|
|MCQ Multiple Choice||Similar to Multiple Choice questions, except that the reader can choose more than one correct answer|
|Short Answer||The reader is allowed to type in an open-ended answer. The answer must contain one or more keywords from a list, in order to be marked correct. Short answer questions is available for paid users only|
Fill in the question text, and choices (if applicable). You will need to specify the correct answer along with the question. The correct answer is used when self-answering, to give a score for the user. For each question, you can apply the following additions:
|Add image||Display an image as part of the question|
|Add answer explanation||Display further information/explanation after the questions are submitted. The explanation will appear in both cases: whether the question is answered correctly or incorrectly. You are free to enter whatever you wish, but usually this is used to justify the answer to the reader. The explanation will appear under the answer choices|
|Add reference||Guide the user to an external source through of a "Learn more" button. This will appear right below the explanation (explained above) once the user's answers have been submitted|
|Score weight||You can assign different weights for different questions in Kotobee Author. The default weight is 1. If all questions have the same score weight, this makes all the questions equal in terms of importance. In general, more important questions should receive higher score weights|
Note: For True/False questions, sometimes you may want to use different labels than True/False, such as Right/Wrong, or Correct/Incorrect, etc. This is supported in Kotobee Author. When adding a True/False question, click on the answer dropdown list (set to False by default), and select Edit choices.. You will be able to modify the labels here. Click on the check button to apply the changes.
In the layout panel you can adjust the look of the question element and set its class name to something specific.
|Color||Change the color of the question element|
|Font size||Change the font size of the questions|
|Padding||Padding space of the question element|
|Class||Controlling the class name of the question element|
|Display in popup||Choose whether the questions are in text element or will pop up upon clicking the icon|
|Add your own icon||Alter the image of the popup questions icon|
|Close button position||Choose where the close button for the popup questions will be|
You may now customize any labels used for buttons or messages inside each question set. This feature is only available for Kotobee Author Premium.
On the left column you will find the original labels used by default for your questions. On the right hand side you will be able to change those labels through the input text fields. The Reset to default button will revert the custom labels back to their default.
By clicking on Show more options, you may set the global options you need for your questions module
|Clear Button||Display a clear button that will clear all the marked answers|
|Preserve Button||Display a checkbox that will optionally preserve the marked answers when going to other chapters in the book|
|Highlight Answers||Highlight the correct answers once the user submits his answers|
|Randomize||Randomize the ordering of the questions everytime the ebook is opened|
|Right-to-left||Adjust the direction of questions and answers to right-to-left, for languages such as Arabic|
|Language||Set a certain language to use when displaying submission buttons and answer reports|
|Passing score||The least score required to pass the test. The user will be given a pass/fail message in the report accordingly. If this field is left blank, then no pass/fail message will be given, but only the user's score. The passing score depends on the Total score (see next). This field is left blank by default|
|Total score||The user's score will be calculated as a fraction of the value entered here. If you create 4 questions, each with a score weight of 1, and then enter a total score of 100 for this question module, each of the 4 questions will receive a score of 25|
|Answer only once||If the ebook is running as a SCORM component, with this checked, the user will be able to answer the questions only once and locked out from answering again|
|Add to objective||Assign this question module to a defined objective, for LMS integration. Objectives may be defined from the Book manager.|
|Send to email||The answers are sent to an email of your choice, such as a teacher's email. The user's email is sent along as well. This option requires that the ebook is a cloud ebook, and the user is logged into the ebook with the appropriate credentials. For more information, please see the knowledge-based article Understanding cloud ebooks|
|Questions displayed||Display a limited number of questions from the pool of questions you have entered.|
Click on Create to finalize the component
Questions in Kotobee's ebooks integrate very nicely with LMS's such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Edmodo. As a SCORM component, the ebook reports every question answered by the student, accompanied by additional information such as the time of answering, the user's answer, the correct answer, and the score weight. With the LMS's gradebook setup correctly, you can have a real exam. By using objectives, you can group different question modules together to achieve certain learning objectives. The LMS's will display the scores and results grouped by objective. Kotobee Author's LMS integration comes as part of the Premium license.
