Learn how to add questions to your ebook with the help of Kotobee Author.

To add questions

  1. Go to the toolbox on the right-hand side of the screen and click on the Questions button.
  2. The Insert/Edit Questions window will appear.

  3. Enter a Title for the questions. This title will appear as the heading for the questions module.
  4. Select how the users receive the answers. Response:
    • Score only: Displays a score for the user after the answers are submitted.
    • Score and answer report: Displays a detailed score report showing the correct and incorrect answers.
    • Do nothing: Neither scores, nor answers are given.
  5. Click on the type of question you would like to add to your questions component. You can add as many questions as you like. There are currently three types of supported questions:
    • True/False: The question is a statement that the reader evaluates as true or false. You may change the labels True and False to anything else. For example: Subjective vs. Objective or Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell.
    • MCQ Single Choice: The reader can only select one correct choice from the list of answers in this multiple choice question.
    • MCQ Multiple Answer: The reader may select any or all choices as an answer to this multiple choice question.
    • Short Answer: The reader is allowed to type in an open-ended answer. The answer must contain one or more keywords from a list, in order to be marked as correct. Short answer questions are available for paid authors only.
  6. Fill in the question text, and choices (if applicable). You will need to specify the correct answer along with the question. The correct answer is used with the self-answer, to give a score for the user.
For each question, you can apply the following additions:
    • Add image: Displays an image as part of the question.
    • Add answer explanation: Displays further information/explanation after the questions are submitted. The explanation will appear in both cases: whether the question is answered correctly or incorrectly and will appear under the answer choices.
    • Add reference: Guide the user to an external source through a "Learn more" button. This will appear right below the explanation (explained above) once the user's answers have been submitted.
    • Score weight: You can assign different weights for different questions in Kotobee Author. The default weight is 1. If all questions have the same score weight, this makes all the questions equal in terms of importance. In general, more important questions should receive higher score weights.

Note: For True/False questions, sometimes you may want to use different labels than True/False, such as Right/Wrong, or Correct/Incorrect, etc. This is supported in Kotobee Author. When adding a True/False question, click on the dropdown list with the answers (set to False by default), and select Edit choices. You will be able to modify the labels here. Click on the check button to apply the changes.

In the layout panel, you can adjust the look of the question set and assign a CSS class.

  • Color: Changes the color of the question set.
  • Font size: Changes the font size of the questions.
  • Padding: Empty space around the question set.
  • Class: Assign a CSS class to the question set.
  • Display in popup: Check if you want the question set to appear in a popup window when the reader clicks on button. If you choose popup, additional options will appear:
    • Add your own icon: Click here if you want to upload an image for the popup question icon.
    • Close button position: Choose where the close button for the popup questions will appear: side, top, or none.

You may now customize any labels used for buttons or messages inside each question set. This feature is only available for Kotobee Author Premium.

On the left column, you will find the original labels used by default for your questions. On the right-hand side, you will be able to change those labels through the input text fields. The Reset to default button will revert the custom labels back to their default.

By clicking on Show more options, you may set the global options you need for your question set.

  • Clear Button: Displays a clear button that will erase all the marked answers.
  • Preserve Button: Displays a checkbox that will optionally preserve the marked answers when going to other chapters in the book.
  • Highlight Answers: Highlights the correct answers once the user submits his answers.
  • Randomize: Randomizes the ordering of the questions every time the ebook is opened.
  • Right-to-left: Adjusts the direction of questions and answers to right-to-left, for languages such as Arabic
  • Language: Sets a the language to use when displaying submission buttons and answer reports.
  • Passing Score: The least score required to pass the test. The user will be given a pass/fail message in the report accordingly. If this field is left blank, then no pass/fail message will be given, but only the user's score. The passing score depends on the Total score (see next). This field is left blank by default.
  • Total score: The user's score will be calculated as a fraction of the value entered here. If you create 4 questions, each with a score weight of 1, and then enter a total score of 100 for this question module, each of the 4 questions will receive a score of 25.
  • Answer only once: If the ebook is running as a SCORM component, with this checked, the user will be able to answer the questions only once and locked out from answering again.
  • Add to objective: Assign this question module to a defined objective for LMS integration. Objectives may be added from the Book manager.
  • Send to email: The answers are sent to an email of your choice, such as a teacher's email. The user's email is sent along as well. This option requires that the ebook is a cloud or library ebook, and the user is logged into the ebook with the appropriate credentials. For more information, please see the knowledge-based article Understanding cloud ebooks.
  • Questions displayed: Displays a limited number of questions from the pool of questions you have entered.

Clicking on Create finalizes the questions portion.

LMS integration

Questions in Kotobee's ebooks integrate very nicely with LMS's such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Edmodo. As a SCORM component, the ebook reports every question answered by the student, accompanied by additional information such as the time of answering, the user's answer, the correct answer, and the score weight. With the LMS's grade book set up correctly, you can have a real exam. By using objectives, you can group different question modules together to achieve certain learning objectives. The LMS's will display the scores and results grouped by objective. Kotobee Author's LMS integration comes as part of the Premium and Institutional licenses.
